Pheasant and Swallow

The Institute for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior, where our activities are based, is located in Inuyama . The Inuyama Campus, is surrounded by rich natural environments. Throughout the year, the campus is filled with the sounds of nature, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the calls of many different bird species.

A short walk around the campus may even give you a chance to observe a Green Pheasant. In spring, male pheasants can often be heard giving their characteristic calls while performing a wing-whirring display, in which they rapidly beat their wings. During May, I was able to observe this behavior every few days.

Around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, Red-rumped Swallows began building nests on the Experimental Research Building.

From spring through summer, we enjoy hearing their cheerful calls around the building.
