Spring Delights

08/04/2026

After a long, bitterly cold winter, we've finally been enjoying many warm days from March into April. The cherry blossoms around the institute quickly came into full bloom—and just as quickly fell. In the gentle spring sunshine, the chimpanzees look very content.

There is one thing they look forward to every year at this time. It's this:

Fresh spring plants such as vetch, clover, and sorrel begin to grow everywhere. They are some of the chimpanzees' favorite treats. When we go out to gather them, the chimpanzees can hardly wait and seem to urge us to hurry.

Some chimpanzees, like Chloe, stuff their mouths full and finish them in no time at all.

Others, like Pan and Popo, nibble away little by little, taking their time to enjoy them.

Sometimes I find myself wishing spring could last a little longer… but each season brings its own special pleasures, so we hope to share more of them with you again soon.
